City of Bielefeld
Bielefeld is a city of about 330,000 residents featuring extensive green areas, parks and woods. Its history stretches back more than 800 years. With around 35,000 students, Bielefeld has a youthful face and, together with its large university campus, is developing into one of Germany’s most dynamic academic cities. The cityscape is shaped by an exemplary network of inner-city green areas and parks, which offers great recreational opportunities to local residents. The Umweltamt (Environmental Agency), which carries out local administrative as well as municipal tasks to safeguard the natural foundations for life, as well as the Umweltbetrieb, which, amongst other tasks, is the municipal service provider responsible for maintaining green areas, intend to jointly test measures to foster biological diversity within urban green areas.
